ISO 17025 Accredited CoAs: How to Verify a Lab's Accreditation Before Signing a Bulk Contract

The 5-step verification procedure

Step 1: Extract the accreditation identifier from the CoA

Every ISO 17025 accredited lab has a unique identifier printed on its CoAs, typically formatted as the national body's abbreviation + a number (e.g. "DAkkS D-PL-19345-01-00" for a German lab, "UKAS 4123" for a UK lab, "ANAB AT-1789" for a US lab).

Step 2: Identify the accrediting body

Match the identifier prefix to a national accreditation body:

Step 3: Check the public register

Every recognised accreditation body publishes a searchable register of accredited labs. Enter the lab name + accreditation number:

• Confirm the accreditation SCOPE includes the specific test method used on your peptide

Step 4: Verify the scope

This is the step most institutional buyers skip. An ISO 17025 accreditation is scope-specific, a lab accredited for "HPLC of pharmaceutical preparations" is NOT necessarily accredited for "HPLC of research peptides" unless the scope statement explicitly lists peptide analysis.

Read the lab's accreditation scope document (linked from the public register entry). Confirm:

• Test method: HPLC / MS / KF / LAL / etc. is listed
• Sample matrix: peptide / pharmaceutical / research chemical is listed
• Concentration range: your batch's concentration falls within the accredited range

Step 5: Match the CoA report against the scope

The CoA should reference the specific ISO 17025 method identifier from the scope. If the CoA claims "HPLC per ISO 17025" without an identifier, that's a red flag, a genuine accredited CoA cites the specific method.

Red flags in accreditation claims

1. Generic "ISO 17025 certified" label, the standard doesn't have a "certification"; it has "accreditation" (from a specific body).
2. No accreditation number on the CoA, impossible to verify.
3. Accreditation body not on the ILAC list, some in-country bodies are not internationally recognised.
